NIKAHNAMAS
Illumination art for the Nikahnama (wedding contract) of newlyweds. The center design consists of their names in Arabic - complementing and harmonizing one another to make a complete whole. The border motif, consists of various elements representing mercy, passion and vitality - alluding to the endless cycle of growth and renewal between the two lovers.
The empty spaces around and below the center design would traditionally contain the text of the wedding contract (or vows) as agreed upon by the couple. The text could be either in English, Arabic or any language of their choosing. Also, this empty space would contain the signatures of the newlyweds and at least three witnesses. If all criteria are met, this art work would be the legally binding document constituting the couple's "Islamic Marriage Contract".
